Why Choose Desert Sands
HAMADAN The 2500 year history of this town goes further back to pre Christian antiquity. It is the central market town for all goods necessary for daily life of the carpet weavers in the region. Although the earliest known Hamadan carpets probably date from then, the carpets woven here have a much longer history – possibly 4000 years. Today, however, Hamadan has a greater significance as a carpet market town rather than a place of production. The state workshops produce very good quality products such as Ekbatanas while smaller, private workshops weave consumer pieces especially of the small formats, known as ‘shahra baff’ – literally knots of the city. COLOUR – Red, blue, tones of dark brown, black & white for outline and ornaments. PATTERNS – diamond, hexagons, polygons, appear simple and rectilinear. Filler ornaments in the field and borders are geometric rather than floral. KNOTS – Turkish knots = 160 p.s.i. or more often in modern pieces 35 – 65 p.s.i. QUALTIY – there are many different grades of quality. HOSSEINABAD – see ‘Hamadan’. Hosseinabad is a satellite town near Hamadan and its carpets are of similar design and of good quality. They are sold on the Hamadan markets. Very desirable items that are long lasting and attractive. Colours/ Patterns/ Knots/ Quality are similar to Hamadan SANANDAJ This city is also the market centre and capital of Kurdistan and the population is around 400’000. Modern pieces do not compare to the excellent carpets produced centuries ago. However the quality has now improved to present day standards. Floral patterns have been stylized into a ‘boteh’ (like paisley) motif which is used in rows and as background designs. The other pattern is the fish, or bee and carpets from here are woven from handspun wool that makes the carpet fairly thin and short piled with a weft thread added after each row of knots. Colours used in the vegetable dyed wool are mostly blue, bright reds and yellows, brown and pistachio. KONTS – 80 – 100 psi. SHIRAZ This is the largest city in the south of Persia and is the capital of the Fars region with a university, historic mosques and palaces, and is an important business centre. It is the gateway for tourists to the nearby historic towns of ancient Persia. Shiraz is called the city of a thousand gardens, famous for its roses and nightingales, which have been celebrated in poetry and carpet designs. Most carpets are not made in the city itself – but in the village workshops surrounding Shiraz or from the looms of the nomads or settled villages belonging to the tribes of the area – which include Qashqa’I, tribes of Khamseh as well as the Luri and Arab groups which inhabit the Fars of the south. Shiraz carpets are very popular carpets today and they sell well everywhere. COLOURS – are predominantly red, red/ brown, red/blue, rust/brown. PATTERNS – the diverse origins of the many tribes here have given these carpets an unrivalled variety of patterns – floral, geometric, arabesques and medallions in a multiplicity of forms. Generally the preference is for small blossoms and leaf ornaments, with diamonds, polygons and other filler forms in abundance. Borders are usually single – one main or up to three – with guard stripes in manifold border designs. KNOTS – apart from the high quality Quashqa’I carpets, Shiraz carpets are relatively coarse – 65 knots p.s.i- either Persian or Turkish knots are used.
